Forming the Team
The very first step in forming a team is to contact a member of the board.
Holding Tryouts
Unlike most competitive youth soccer clubs, the Racine Spartans Soccer Club does not hold club-wide tryout sessions. The Club has adopted a decentralized approach to team management, allowing each team to decide for itself whether tryouts are appropriate.
This policy shifts the emphasis to team continuity, growth and the development of a cohesive unit, both on and off the field. As such, coaches and players have come to appreciate the importance and impact of true team play.
Team management tends to follow an annual cycle that begins in early June, when tryouts can be held for most age levels. Please note the scheduling of tryouts and the recruiting activities leading up to tryouts are specifically restricted by the Wisconsin Youth Soccer Association.
Registering with a League
If your team is already in place, you can choose to transfer from either another club or a recreational league. You'll have to go through the league registration process described below, but at least you can skip the tryout sessions. For more details on bringing an existing team into the Racine Spartans Soccer Club, please contact one of the Club officers.
When planning for your roster size, be aware that the Wisconsin Youth Soccer Association is mandating small-sided soccer . For some age groups, this will impact the number of players accepted during tryouts. Please refer to the Age Eligibility Chart for details on how to determine a player's age for the purposes of joining a team.
Once you're sure you'll have enough players to field a team, you must register the team with the appropriate District or State league. Spartan teams will register with either:
- one of the State Leagues
- the Metro (Milwaukee) District
- the Southeast Wisconsin Competitive League
When registering a new team, you'll register your Boys team with the Metro District and your Girls team with the SECL. State league play is reserved for those teams that have been promoted to that level of play, based upon league performance.
These Leagues have similar team registration procedures that require the completion of a team registration form and the payment of a team registration fee. This fee must be paid when the registration application is submitted. Note that in some cases, the team registration form must be signed by the Club President . Review your form carefully before submitting it.
Team registrations must be submitted according to strict and tight deadlines. You will have to act quickly if you plan on holding tryouts before submitting the team registration. Luckily, the team registration forms are easy to complete and do not require player information (which tends to be a more time consuming process). It is recommended that you personally deliver the application to the State Office , which services all three leagues, just to make sure that your application has been submitted before the deadline.
What if you're not sure you have enough players to field a team? The best advice is to make sure that you have commitments to play or if you're a few players short, that it is reasonable to expect additional interest in the team before the season starts. In order to evaluate your situation, you need to be aware of the age-specific roster sizes as well as the additional demands that are made on players as they enter high school and the impact that can have on the number of players that may (or may not show up to a given match).
Understandably, the leagues frown on clubs that submit the paperwork for a team and then fail to meet their commitment. The failure to field a team usually results in schedule revisions and fines.
